Birds of the Mindo Cloudforest

QUITO, ECUADOR, February 11, 2023 —

The Mindo Cloudforest, which covers 47,000 acres along the western slopes of the Andes in Ecuador, is a region of astonishing beauty and biodiversity, home to more than 400 species of birds and countless species of orchids, butterflies and unique plants and mammals.

The gallery below shows are just a few examples of the incredible bird diversity found in the Mindo region, as seen at San Tadeo Birding. In the near future I’ll post galleries showing some of the incredible diversity of butterflies and orchids also seen in the Cloudforest.

Holly and I hired a Quito-based guide (Elizabeth B. and her driver from toursbylocals.com) and spent in Mindo region, visiting first the San Tadeo birding site, and then moving on to other sites with amazing displays of butterflies and orchids, while also enjoying a lively and informative lunch in Mindo with Elizabeth.

I travel, and write, and take pictures, and sometimes I try to figure out why. Memento mori. Memento vivere. I'll be home soon.
